Starting an Online Business: Selecting a Niche

Posted on July 22nd, 2007 in Business by Aaron

Last time I mentioned forming a corporation, and a bit of info on that. This time I’d like to talk about the next step, which is actually starting the business. This will be a more general take on things, and in subsequent articles I’ll get into more detail.

Just to make sure you don’t think I’m some inexperienced kid claiming to know what he’s talking about, I’ll give you a little background information on myself. I was the guy in middle school who took his girlfriend to the computer lab to hangout. I was the guy who decided he was going to make money off websites online when he was 13 years old. Now I’m 20, and I’ve been successfully making money since middle school. Granted, I didn’t start off making much of anything. I hosted all my websites on free hosts, I checked out all the affiliate sites, I learned everything on my own. It was like this online puzzle had sparked an interest within me and I wanted to figure it all out, and eventually hopefully manage to make a living out of it. That’s what I’m trying to do now. College coupled with working as a “corporate slave” has allowed me to realize the importance of doing what you WANT to do, not what society thinks you should do (i.e. go to college, get a job, be happy).

I don’t want to get a job, I want to MAKE my own job.

I’d suggest you try to make yourself take on a similar point of view. It’s great motivation :) (And cubicles suck!)

Now, down to business. The first thing you need to do is decide what your interests are. You need to find that niche of interest, that corner of the web that excites you and can keep you dazed for hours! Does it have to only be one specific niche? No, most definitely not. However, I found that it was great to start on one niche and eventually expand to others. In this way you can concentrate more on building up your business such that it is of high quality with relation to your favorite topic. Starting with multiple niches may result in quality deterioration, as you can’t concentrate all your effort on one specific aspect of everything you’re working on.

To give you an example of this, I began my cyberlife in the gaming niche. Yes, I was a hardcore gamer. My first website was a game cheat codes site, and I worked on it hour upon hour, learning how to design webpages, how to link everything together effectively, how to track visitors, and what affilliate programs to use. My main motivation originally wasn’t money, it was just to create something that people would like and come back to.  I wanted that feeling of empowerment you get when you own something that people like and continually use. This may sound juvenile, but I think it was my perception of a way to be considered cool on the web. Whatever the true motivation, I was working on something that intrigued me, and that was all that mattered.

Eventually you may be able to expand to niches that aren’t necessarily of interest to you, especially as your interest in web development itself grows and grows, to the point where you don’t even care about the content anymore. However, for starters I would suggest that you pick something of high interest, and stick with it for a while until you learn the ropes.  Remember,

You’re making your OWN job, not getting a job!

Since you’re making the job yourself, you might as well make it related to something of interest to you.

[…] This is the main way I make money online. Affiliate programs pay you either on sales commissions, 1000 impressions, per click, or per lead. The best way to make money off these programs is to develop websites with heavy traffic flows that have affiliate links on them. This will give you an income that is continual and may only require maintenance, rather than one that requires you to read emails or fill out surveys every day. However, it will also likely be harder to get going. […]
